Maned Wolf

Scientific Name: Chrysocyon brachyurus

Maned wolves long legs are a special adaptation to help the animal see above the tall grass of its natural habitat.

Sunset Zoo's resident maned wolves are Maya (female) and Fenix (male). Due to maned wolves solitary nature only one maned wolf is viewable at a time.

  • Size: to shoulder 39 inches
  • Weight: 44 to 51 pounds
  • Diet: Wide variety of fruits and small mammals, such as armadillos and rabbits
  • Habitat: Grasslands and scrub forest
  • Range in the Wild: Central South America

Conservation Status

Listed as Near Threatened - wild population is expected to decline by 10% in the next decade as a result of ongoing habitat loss.
