Animal Shelter

The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter provides service to the city of Manhattan, Kansas.

The shelter does not provide service to the city of Riley, Junction City, Leonardville, Fort Riley, or Ogden. There is an $80 surrender fee per animal from these areas. 

Please call our office to schedule an appointment to surrender animals.

The shelter is open to the public six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and is closed on Sundays and holidays. The staff cleans, evaluates, vaccinates, and handles medical needs of the animals from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM daily.

Animal control officers respond to calls from 7:30 AM until 6:00 PM Monday through Friday, and they are on call for emergencies on evenings and weekends. They also assist in the shelter as needed.

Covid-19 Mask Policy

As an entity of City of Manhattan, starting August 9, 2021, all visitors and employees will be required to wear a face mask inside the Animal Shelter and at all other indoor City facilities. This applies to both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals age two and up.

If you need a mask during your visit, please ask our staff and they will be happy to provide one to you!
