Animal Shelter

The T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter provides service to the City of Manhattan, Kansas.

The shelter does not provide service to the cities of Riley, Junction City, Leonardville, Fort Riley, or Ogden. Thus, there is an $80 surrender fee per animal from these areas.

Please call our office to schedule an appointment to surrender animals.

The shelter is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The shelter is closed on Sundays and City holidays. The staff cleans, evaluates, vaccinates, and handles medical needs of the animals from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily. (Appointments may be made during this morning time frame ahead of time, but only if staff are available.)

Animal control officers respond to calls from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and they are on call for emergencies on evenings and weekends. They also assist in the shelter as needed.
