Summer Theatre Academy
Thank you to those that attended our first year collaboration between Parks & Recreation and K-State School of Theatre, Music, and Dance. We had a fantastic first year and have already started planning for year two. We will have updates on this page as well as on our camps page in the Spring of 2020. Learn more on our Camps page.
Classes are for beginning students and use basic dance steps and choreography to help children develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture. Students are introduced to basic beginning techniques and vocabulary. You may enroll in more than one class. Classes begin in February 2020 and have a maximum of 15 students and will be held at the City Park Roundhouse.
|Pre-Ballet||Ages 3 and 4||Ballet classes are the basis for all dance training and help children develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture. Students will be introduced to basic beginning ballet techniques and vocabulary in this fun class.|
|Beginning Hip Hop||Ages 5 through 8||This class introduces students to the basic concepts of hip hop dance and culture in a fast-paced, high-energy setting. Learn hip hop technique and choreography in this exciting class.|
|Dance Squad||Ages 5 through 8||Dance squad incorporates various dance styles (i.e. hip-hop, jazz and contemporary), with basic tumbling and pompom/cheer. Pompoms will be provided by MPRD.|
|Beginning Ballet||Ages 5 through 8||Beginning ballet emphasizes technique, barre work, and choreography, as well as the ballet vocabulary that is used throughout all other dance genres. Students in this class will develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture.|
|Beginning Tap||Ages 5 through 8||Tap is a form of dance that uses the tap shoes striking the floor to make percussive sound. This class will explore both Jazz and Broadway-style tap. Be prepared for a workout as we explore rhythm and build strength!|
|Ballet||Ages 9 through 12||This is an advanced class that follows pre-ballet and beginning ballet classes. This class provides advancement in emphasizing technique, barre work and choreography, as well as ballet vocabulary. Students will continue to develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture. Ballet slippers required.|
Registration for youth dance classes begins on January 6, 2020. Click here to register.
Students will be instructed on proper attire at their first class meeting. Students in Beginning Ballet will wear ballet slippers. Students in Pre-Ballet may wear ballet slippers or socks. Tap students will need to wear tap shoes. All other students should wear tennis shoes and socks to their first class session.
