Summer Theatre Academy


This newly constructed Summer Theatre Academy is a collaboration between Manhattan Parks and Recreation and the Kansas State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.  The full-day program offers age-appropriate theatre classes in the mornings taught by K-State faculty and students.  Afternoons include rehearsals and participation in all aspects of theatre production - creating scenery, costumes, and props.  This fully immersive theatre academy is centered on the creativity of the participants. Youth Dance

Classes are for beginning students and use basic dance steps and choreography to help children develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture. Students are introduced to basic beginning techniques and vocabulary. You may enroll in more than one class. Classes begin in September 2019 and have a maximum of 15 students and will be held at the City Park Roundhouse.

Pre-BalletAges 3 and 4Ballet classes are the basis for all dance training and help children develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture. Students will be introduced to basic beginning ballet techniques and vocabulary in this fun class.
Beginning Hip HopAges 5 through 8This class introduces students to the basic concepts of hip hop dance and culture in a fast-paced, high-energy setting. Learn hip hop technique and choreography in this exciting class.
Dance SquadAges 5 through 8Dance squad incorporates various dance styles (i.e. hip-hop, jazz and contemporary), with basic tumbling and pompom/cheer. Pompoms will be provided by MPRD.
Beginning BalletAges 5 through 8Beginning ballet emphasizes technique, barre work, and choreography, as well as the ballet vocabulary that is used throughout all other dance genres. Students in this class will develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture.
Beginning TapAges 5 through 8Tap is a form of dance that uses the tap shoes striking the floor to make percussive sound. This class will explore both Jazz and Broadway-style tap. Be prepared for a workout as we explore rhythm and build strength!
BalletAges 9 through 12This is an advanced class that follows pre-ballet and beginning ballet classes.  This class provides advancement in emphasizing technique, barre work and choreography, as well as ballet vocabulary.  Students will continue to develop and improve their poise, flexibility, grace, self-discipline, and posture.  Ballet slippers required.

Students will be instructed on proper attire at their first class meeting. Students in Beginning Ballet will wear ballet slippers. Students in Pre-Ballet may wear ballet slippers or socks. Tap students will need to wear tap shoes. All other students should wear tennis shoes and socks to their first class session.
